Socks & Athletes: Running Socks

When taking up the sport of running, often people spend a great deal of time and energy (and money!) choosing the perfect running shoe. While choice of shoe is admittedly very important, you should not overlook the importance of choosing the right running sock.

In recent years, advances in technology have produced "smart" fibers and more sophisticated knitting and weaving methods making running sock choices broader and more comprehensive than ever.

Using a plain cotton sock when running is a common mistake that beginning runners make. Cotton socks absorb moisture rather than "wicking" it away. Running will cause your feet to produce more perspiration, and by wearing plain cotton socks, you leave yourself susceptible to foot problems such as blistering and athlete's foot.

Choose running socks made of synthetic fibers such as olefin. These types of socks will help wick away moisture produced by your feet so that there is no moisture build up.

It is important to not only choose your socks based on their classification as running socks, but also based on the type of running shoes you choose and the type of running you'll be doing. A marathon runner will have different needs than a casual runner or jogger, trail runner will have still different needs, as will those who run in warmer or cooler climates.

For those with existing foot problems, you might need compression socks (which can help with swelling) or cushioning socks (which have gel embedded in their soles. For those with tendencies toward blistering, there are double layer anti-blister socks available.

Comfort is also a critical factor in choosing the right running socks. Before purchasing socks, make sure to turn the sock inside out to ensure the sock does not have any thick seams. If you already own running socks with thicker seams, turning the sock inside out might be an option for you to avoid rubbing and chafing.

Always remember to bring your running shoes with you when purchasing running socks. You want to ensure that the socks fit properly but also that they do not change the fit of your shoes. If you wear a sock that is too thick, you may find that your running shoes feel tighter and uncomfortable.

Don't ever attempt to run without socks. Wearing socks while running is a critical factor in keeping your feet protected, healthy and injury free.
